PMU care

Post-PMU care is a structured three-phase process — immediate healing, active protection and maintenance — in which each product type has a specific function at a specific time. Confusing phases or skipping products directly affects the final result the client sees.

Post-PMU Care — Why the Photo Oil Is the Most Underestimated Product in the Protocol

When a client complains that their PMU has faded too quickly, the more frequent cause is not technique or pigment — it is missed UV protection during the healing phase. It's important to note that ultraviolet radiation breaks down the molecules of organic and hybrid pigments. While the skin heals — over a period of four to six weeks — its protective barrier is compromised. This means UV penetrates more readily to the pigment deposits in the dermis and accelerates their fading. Photo oil is applied to the surface during this phase precisely to block UV access to still-unprotected pigment.

Phase 1: Immediately After the Procedure (0–3 days)

In the hours and first days after a PMU procedure, the tissue is perforated and reactive. Healing gels and balms in this category are designed for application in this phase — they provide moisture, reduce the risk of heavy crust formation and support conditions for correct healing. It's important to note that excessive crust formation in PMU is undesirable — when it falls off, it can take pigment with it.

Green soap is used for gentle cleansing of the procedure area in the initial days — no rubbing, patting only.

Phase 2: Active Healing (3–14 days)

Photo oil enters the protocol in this phase. It is applied daily over the healing PMU area before outdoor exposure. Vaseline in this phase maintains moisture and protects from contamination. In practice, the protocol looks like this: morning — cleansing, photo oil application; evening — healing balm application.

Phase 3: Maintenance and Preparation for a Touch-Up

After complete healing, moisturising products maintain the skin around and over the PMU area in good condition. For lip PMU, the lip scrub is a preparation tool before a correction session — not for use during the healing period. It's important to note that mechanical exfoliation on unhealed PMU is contraindicated.

The SPF 50+ lip balm is specific to the lip zone — since lips are exposed to UV even in predominantly indoor settings, protection is recommended for the full healing duration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the client need all the products in this category?

Not all simultaneously. Each product is for a specific phase or zone. The minimum protocol includes a healing product for direct application and photo oil for outdoor exposure.

How important is sun protection during PMU healing?

Critically important. It's important to note that even overcast skies do not fully block UV. Clients who skip photo oil consistently show a more faded result after healing.

When is the lip scrub used?

Before the procedure to prepare the lip surface, and after complete healing before a correction session. It is not used during active healing.

Does vaseline replace a specialist healing gel?

Vaseline protects and retains moisture but does not contain active components that accelerate regeneration. The two products serve different functions and can be used in parallel.
