A lash primer is a product applied after degreasing to bring the lash surface to the optimal chemical condition for bonding. It's important to note that a degreased lash is clean — but not necessarily ready for maximum adhesion.

Lash Primers — the Difference Between "Clean" and "Ready to Bond"

Degreasing removes visible contamination — sebum, oils, cosmetics. Priming goes further. It's important to note that cyanoacrylate adhesive bonds through a partial ionic reaction with the keratin surface. If the lash pH is outside the optimal range, or if the ionic charges on the surface are disrupted by residual compounds, the reaction is weaker — even on a lash that appears clean.

The primer corrects precisely this: it neutralises residual moisture, balances the lash pH and prepares the surface for the chemical reaction with the adhesive. This means that with correct priming, the adhesive "grips" more strongly — not because of a greater quantity, but because of better surface readiness.

When Priming Has the Most Visible Effect

Priming has the most noticeable impact with three client profiles: clients with very oily skin and high sebum production (where even after degreasing, residual traces affect pH); clients with eye discomfort who produce tears during the procedure; and work in higher-humidity environments where moisture on the lash after degreasing can compromise adhesion. It's important to note that for these client profiles, skipping the primer is felt in the retention figures.

The Correct Application Order

The primer does not replace degreasing — it is applied AFTER degreasing and AFTER the degreaser has fully dried. It's important to note that applying primer over a wet or insufficiently degreased lash produces no benefit and may actually compromise bonding.

Shelf Life: 24 Months / 4 Months After Opening

Primers share the same shelf life as degreasers. It's important to note that the 4-month post-opening limit is shorter than many comparable products — order in a volume that matches actual usage frequency to avoid waste.

Can primer and degreaser replace each other?
